The President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga met the NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in the main venue of the forthcoming NATO Summit – the Olympic Centre. The NATO Secretary-General informed the President about the preparation process of the Riga Declaration as well as appreciated how Riga was prepared for the NATO Summit. The Secretary-General stressed the symbolic significance of the Riga Summit in the process of work of NATO as a transatlantic organization. For ensuring the effectiveness of the alliance in the transatlantic security.
The parties discussed the most topical issues on the NATO agenda, including the establishment of the NATO forces of fast reaction, prospects of NATO enlargement and the future of the NATO peace-keeping mission in Afghanistan.
The President thanked Jaap de Hoop Scheffer for his active role in creating the NATO Summit.
