When promulgating the state budget for 2017 and the state budget-related laws, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis urges to evaluate opportunities to streamline the procedure for drafting the budget bill package so that decision-making on national financial resources would be comprehensible and transparent and would promote public trust in the decision made by the state power.


“The new Estonian government will continue the priorities in foreign policy and security set by the previous governments by strengthening cooperation within the European Union and NATO,” said the new Head of the Government of Estonia Jüri Ratas during his meeting with President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis.


President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis stressed that strengthening the use of Latvian language in the society was required, including promotion of the learning of Latvian language among non-Latvians starting from pre-school age already, during his meeting with representatives of the State Language Commission (SLC) today.


President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis said that Latvia and Lithuania were close partners and allies sharing a dynamic and active political dialogue during a meeting with Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Viktoras Pranckietis in the Riga Castle today.


President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis returned the Law "Amendments to the Micro-enterprise Tax Law" adopted on November 23 to the Saeima for reconsideration, which provided termination of the micro-enterprise tax regime. The President of Latvia believed that the proposed regulation was deficient and opposite to previously made decisions, on which entrepreneurs and the general public relied.


“We can learn not only from the mistakes of the past, but also from the success stories of the past, so it is important to know them,” stressed President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis at the opening of the annual conference of the Commission of Historians of Latvia “The Economic Challenges of the New States in the Baltic Region from 1917 to 1922” today.


According to the Law on National Security and the Law on National Armed Forces, President of Latvia, Raimonds Vējonis sent a letter to Madam Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece on December 1 where he called to approve Major General Leonīds Kalniņš as the new Commander of the National Armed Forces.

President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis met with Madam Speaker of the Saeima Ināra Mūrniece, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis, Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs and Chairman of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš on Friday, November 25. The officials discussed the current foreign policy situation that Europe and Latvia faced currently and the tasks that out both the parliament and the government should do on foreign policy.
