State Language Commission

The primary goal for the State Language Commission is to identify strategic directions for language policy on the basis of all-encompassing, situational analysis- based research. The Commission also supervises the implementation of the State Language Policy Programme, and it takes part in the drafting of legislation in the relevant area.

Establishment of the Commission

The State Language Commission was established on 16 January 2002 at the initiative of the then president of Latvia, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, by signing a joint order with the Prime Minister.

The Commission was established with the aim of studying the situation of Latvian as state language of the country and to draft recommendations on how to strengthen its status and develop it further. On 5 February 2004, the President of Latvia and the Prime Minister appointed Andrejs Veisbergs as the Chair of the Commission based on their order.

President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis renewed the work of the State Language Commission in December 2015 and invited Andrejs Veisbergs to continue his leadership in the Commission.

Establishment of the Commission

The Commission’s members are experts in various areas of linguistics, the world of culture, science, and education, as well as other members of the society. The composition of the Commission may be expanded; the members thereof are working on a voluntary basis without any remuneration.
