Latvia’s 90th Anniversary

On November 18, 2008, all of Latvia commemorated the 90th anniversary of the country’s proclamation of independence in 1918.  President Zatlers was actively involved in the many events that took place that day.  The slogan for the celebration was “Light Up for Latvia,” and there were events throughout the anniversary year.

Events which gained particularly favour among local residents included “Bridges of Light,” “Run for Latvia,” and major events in the historical regions of Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Latgale.

The celebration of Latvia’s  90th anniversary showed that the people of Latvia know how to party in different joyous ways.  The event was a success, because people wanted to take active part in the various processes.  Pride and joy about Latvia’s birthday was felt by everyone who keeps the country in his or her heart.  People in Latvia and throughout the world demonstrated how important Latvia is to them.  They produced a bridge of light and energy between themselves and Latvia during the celebrations.  There is no doubt that Latvia’s centennial will be celebrated even more colourfully.
