International conference on educating children and youth with special needs

An international conference, “An Inclusive Approach to the Education of Children and Youth With Special Needs,” will be held in Rīga from July 12-14.  There will be more than 400 specialists, scientists, educational policy developers and representatives of non-governmental organisations from 40 countries. First Lady Lilita Zatlere will open the conference.  She appreciates its importance, and that’s why she agreed to become the event’s patroness.

A philanthropic programme to complete the restoration of the Rundāle Castle

Latvia’s First Lady Lilita Zatlere is proud to be patroness of a philanthropy programme that is aimed at raising the funds that are needed to complete the restoration of the Rundāle Castle by 2014.  Over the next four years, the renovation of the castle is to be fully completed, thus restoring the most important example of Baroque architecture from the 18th century in Latvia to its full glory.

The Valmiera Residential Elementary School and Developmental Centre for Hearing-Impaired Children

Since July 2008, when the First Lady met with a youth choir from the Valmiera Boarding School and Development Centre for Hearing-Impaired Children which was preparing to take part in the Latvian Song and Dance Festival, she has been the centre’s patroness. Since the festival, the First Lady has visited the centre several times, meeting with children and adolescents from Valmiera to come up with creative activities that encourage the kids to be proud of their talents and to develop them in support of their future hopes.

The “Pīlādzītis” kindergarten

A new kindergarten, “Pīlādzītis,” was opened in the town of Smiltene in June 2008. President and Mrs Lilita Zatlere attended the opening ceremony as part of the International Children’s Day. Since that day, the First Lady has been the patroness of the kindergarten, although the children known her as their kindergarten’s godmother. A mountain-ash tree that was planted at the opening of the new kindergarten is carefully tended by the children.

International Bach Chamber Music Festival 

The harpsichordist Aina Kalnciema is the originator of the International Bach Chamber Music Festival, and she has turned it into a celebration which is open to one and all. As a lover of music and the arts, Mrs Lilita Zatlere is honoured to serve as the patroness of such a lovely tradition in Latvian cultural life. This year music by Bach and his contemporaries will be played at concert halls in Rīga and castles allow over Latvia throughout the year, until November.

Concerts in honour of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Chopin

In 2010, the world is commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Polish composer Frederic Chopin. The Hermanis Brauns Fund is producing a series of concerts, “Chopin 200,” which will bring distinguished pianists to Rīga who have all had things to say about Chopin and his work. Mrs Lilita Zatlere has agreed to serve as patroness for the anniversary concerts.

International Jāzeps Vītols Piano Competition

On October 1, 2008, Mrs Lilita Zatlere became patroness of the annual International Jāzeps Vītols Piano Competition. Thus she demonstrated the support which she and her husband want to give to Latvia’s most talented young musicians and their development. The competition brings together young pianists from different countries, which offers Latvia’s musicians a challenge and an excellent opportunity to present themselves.
