A philanthropic programme to complete the restoration of the Rundāle Castle

Latvia’s First Lady Lilita Zatlere is proud to be patroness of a philanthropy programme that is aimed at raising the funds that are needed to complete the restoration of the Rundāle Castle by 2014.  Over the next four years, the renovation of the castle is to be fully completed, thus restoring the most important example of Baroque architecture from the 18th century in Latvia to its full glory.  The Rundāle Castle is one of the most popular tourism destinations in Latvia.  The full restoration of the castle, which has been the cherished dream of castle director Imants Lancmanis for nearly half a century, will make it possible for the castle to become one of the key destinations of those who seek the world’s cultural heritage.  It will rank alongside the architectural ensemble at Peterhof, the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, and Versailles in France.  The philanthropic programme will help this dream to come true in the next several years.

The restoration programme was presented on May 23, 2010, at a celebration to commemorate the 274th anniversary of laying the cornerstone for the castle.  The agreement was signed by Imants Lancmanis, Courlandian Prince Ernst Johann, and Boriss and Ināra Teterevs, who have helped to finance the restoration of the castle for many years.

In undertaking the job of patroness of the philanthropic programme, Mrs Lilita Zatlere hopes that this initiative will become an outstanding example of private initiative in the field of culture – something that is of great importance throughout the world.  President and First Lady Zatlere believe that the Rundāle Castle is a part of Latvia’ spiritual and material heritage – something that it is important to preserve for future generations.
