The public activities of First Lady
International Bach Chamber Music Festival
The harpsichordist Aina Kalnciema is the originator of the International Bach Chamber Music Festival, and she has turned it into a celebration which is open to one and all. As a lover of music and the arts, Mrs Lilita Zatlere is honoured to serve as the patroness of such a lovely tradition in Latvian cultural life.
“If Bach’s contemporaries did not appreciate his eternal music, in which he reflected the deepest thoughts about the most important aspects of life, then musical experts today feel that Bach’s music is completeness itself,” says Mrs Zatlere. “These tested values bring people, nations and countries together, because music never requires a translation. That is why projects of a European level of quality such as the Bach Chamber Music Festival are of such great importance in preserving cultural values.”
2010 is a jubilee year for the festival. Over the course 10 years, there have been 85 concerts featuring 80 musicians and musical groups from 19 countries. First Lady Zatlere opened the 10th Bach Chamber Music Festival on March 20. She and President Zatlers enjoyed a performance by the outstanding orchestra Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen.
This year music by Bach and his contemporaries will be played at concert halls in Rīga and castles allow over Latvia throughout the year, until November.
