Centenary of the Republic of Latvia
The President of Latvia is a patron of the Celebration to mark the Centenary of Latvia, and he has established the Centenary Council where all former Presidents of Latvia are members.
In 2016, the Centenary Council met for two meetings, where Minister of Culture Dace Melbārde presented her report on the progress in planning the centenary celebrations, as well they discussed the organisation of the celebration and the significant plans regarding the ceremonial events. The members of the Centenary Council called for developing and supporting the projects that could involve every resident of Latvia and encouraged everyone to think about their gift to the country on its big day.
On 15 December 2016, the initiative “Way of Latvian Flag” was launched in the Riga Castle. Within the framework of the initiative, the national flag of Latvia and a special book of messages will travel to the Latvian people around the world before the centenary of the state of Latvia, where everyone is invited to write a wish to Latvia on its centenary. President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis wrote the first message in the book of messages in the Riga Castle followed by the young people from the Youth Steering Committee of the Centenary Celebrations of Latvia “Festive Ornament”.
On 5 April 2017, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis met with the organisers of the events to mark the Centenary of the Republic of Latvia at a festive event in the Riga Castle, those were more than 300 organisers of the centenary celebrations from all over Latvia. The preparations done already and the major upcoming events of the Centenary in 2017 were presented during the event.
On 26 April 2017, the President of Latvia participated in the opening ceremony of the Latvian’s Centenary Lottery project, implemented by the Ministry of Finance and state-owned enterprise Latvijas Loto in the honour of the Centenary of the Republic of Latvia.
On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia and the opening of the Latvia’s Centenary celebration, the President of Latvia participated in several events. On 4 May 2017, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis planted the first oak during the campaign “Embrace Latvia” in Nīca while opening the celebrations to mark the centenary of Latvia. During the campaign "Embrace Latvia", the centenary oaks will be planted in 45 municipalities of Latvia bordering with other countries. The President of Latvia will also plant oaks in Liepāja, Bekši in Rēzekne Region, and in Daugavpils.
On 5 May 2017, the President of Latvia participated in the opening ceremony of the monument of the Centenary of the Latgale Congress and the square in honour of the Centenary of the Latgale Congress, as well as he addressed the Latgale Centenary Congress in Rēzekne, whereas the President of Latvia participated in the conference “Towards a State of Latvia. The Latgale Centenary Congress. Peoples’ Forum in Daugavpils” and in the White Tablecloth Festival in Daugavpils.
