Latvija un Francija iestājas par vienotu Eiropu un atbalsta tās ekonomiski un sociāli līdzsvarotu attīstību
“Latvia and France have excellent bilateral relations. We are pleased to sign the Action Plan of the Strategic Partnership between Latvia and France, which gives us an additional impetus to work together even more closely,” stressed President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis after the meeting of the Presidents of the three Baltic States and the President of France at the Elysée Palace in Paris.

During the meeting, the President of Latvia noted that we were interested in further developing of bilateral relations in economy, security and defence, culture and education, as well as continuing close cooperation in the EU, NATO and other multilateral fora.

“From the perspective of Latvia, safety is a key priority in developing the European project. The Baltic States and France are strong NATO allies with a common understanding of current security challenges and a comprehensive approach to strengthening defensibility. Latvia appreciates the contribution of France to strengthening collective defence in the Baltic region,” outlined Raimonds Vējonis.

Latvia and France take part in several missions and operations together in Africa and the Middle East, thus supporting the global fight against terrorism and promoting international security. The European Union has also taken a significant step forward in security in the short term to develop capabilities that complement NATO.

When discussing the future of Europe, the President of Latvia noted that Latvia was interested in participating in the new initiatives and addressing them so that the interests of Latvia were taken into account.

The President of Latvia emphasised, “Although we are not fans of the idea of federalism, it is important for us to be a part of an active Europe, a part of a debate about the future. Location in the province or at the second speed is unacceptable for us. It is essential for us that Europe is united and that its development is balanced in economic and social terms. Like France, it is important for us that the decisions of the European Union serve their citizens, so we support the proposal made by France for consultation with EU citizens.”

We are pleased that the centenary of Latvia is celebrated in France with an extensive cultural program. “I was delighted to open the exhibition “Symbolism in the Baltic Art” in one of the most important European museums, the Orsay Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition is a powerful message about our European affiliation. This is clearly demonstrated by the richness of our outstanding art. It is a truly ambitious and symbolic event in honour of the centenary of Latvia and the Baltic States,” mentioned President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis.
