Egils Levits
Valsts prezidents atzinīgi vērtē PBLA iesaisti diasporas politikas stiprināšanā
On 18 February, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with the leadership of the World Federation of Free Latvians (WFFL) in the Riga Castle to discuss the role of WFFL in development of diaspora policies.

Meeting focused on current priorities of WFFL in Latvia and across diasporas, position of WFFL on better diaspora policy, re-emigration and impact of diaspora media.

President of Latvia urged WFFL to be active in identifying major administrative obstacles that hinder re-emigration and the return of Latvians to Latvia. Egils Levits also welcomed WFFL initiative to strengthen the cooperation with different stakeholders in the economic sector, for example, trade chambers because ‘Latvians living abroad should feel that they have a say in how Latvian economy develops’.

Representatives of WFFL expressed their support for President Levits’ position on the need to promote integration of Latvian information space into European cultural space to get the residents of Latvia more engaged in European information space. WFFL also stressed the role of diaspora and diaspora media in tackling this issue.

Other topics discussed during the meeting included the role of Diaspora Advisory Board and cooperation between WFFL with Latvia’s government bodies on issues related to diaspora education and other vital areas.

President of Latvia met with Chair of WFFL Kristīne Saulīte, Vice-Chair of WFFL and Vice-President of American Latvian Association (ALA) Mārtiņš Andersons, Executive Director of ALA Raits Eglītis and Head of ALA Representation in Latvia Jānis Andersons.
