On 21 November 2018, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis accredited the Ambassadors of Spain, Slovenia, Ecuador, and Tajikistan to Latvia.

During the meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Spain Ms Susana Margarita Cámara Angulo, the President of Latvia outlined the political dialogue and bilateral relations between the two countries. Latvia highly appreciates Spain’s participation in the NATO Battle Group deployed in Latvia as well as the regular annual participation in the NATO Baltic air-policing mission. The Spanish troops in Latvia is the second-largest contingent following Canada as the leading nation of the NATO Group. Economic cooperation is developing positively, and Latvia is interested in further development of the cooperation in bio-economy, biomedicine, smart technologies, smart energy, and ICT. Latvia appreciates the great potential of both countries in culture and education, especially Spain’s support for organising the festive events to mark the Centenary of Latvia.

During the meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Slovenia Ms Božena Forštnarič Boroje, Raimonds Vējonis noted that Latvia intended to strengthen cross-sectoral cooperation among enterprises and among educational and research institutions. The parties highly evaluated the trend of increasing turnover of bilateral trade between the countries. Co-operation in international organisations such as the United Nations and the participation of Slovenia in the NATO-led Battle Group in Latvia are appreciated much.

During the meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Ecuador Mr Manuel Mejía Dalmau, the President of Latvia welcomed the friendly and constructive relations between the two countries, including cooperation within international organisations. Latvia is interested in continuing the political dialogue and expanding bilateral co-operation. We also wish to facilitate cooperation in economics, education, science, and legal assistance. By strengthening bilateral economic relations and increasing trade turnover, it is possible to identify new cooperation opportunities in various other sectors.

In his conversation with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan Mahmadsharif Mahmud Haqdod, the President of Latvia stressed that the Central Asian region, including Tajikistan, was among the priority regions of Latvia in development cooperation, and he voiced Latvia’s interest in the political dialogue between the two countries. The officials noted that we found facilitation of economic contacts and increasing trade volume with Central Asia in transit, logistics, and transport as prospective. Extending further EU relations with Tajikistan was essential to Latvia. It is also important to strengthen stability and security in the Central Asian region, which can be achieved by promoting international cooperation on combating and preventing cross-border terrorism.
