On 3 June 2025, Latvia became the member of United Nations (UN) Security Council for 2026–2027. This is a historic achievement. Latvia has never been elected a member of the Security Council before.

The book Latvia in the United Nations, published by the Chancery of the President of Latvia, was written during the most intense phase of the election campaign, and the co-authors of the book were closely involved in achieving Latvia’s membership in the UN, either during compiling of this publication or in the period since the restoration of Latvia’s independence. This book provides insight into both the glory and the downfalls of the UN, as well as the potential of this organisation, whose destiny is in the hands of its Member States. It contains interviews with Latvian professionals, officials and experts, as well as their essays that demonstrate how Latvia contributed to building a stronger international community and multilateralism.

Now that Latvia has been elected the member of the UN Security Council, we have an unprecedented opportunity to protect democratic values and the rules-based international order, promote our international image, and take a firm stand on issues that are pivotal to the security of the region. Together we ensure peace and resilience!
