During the meeting, President Levits and Minister Linkevičius discussed the recent developments in Belarus and yesterday’s meeting of the European Union foreign ministers. Egils Levits and Linas Linkevičius both noted that EU needs to impose sanctions against Belarusian officials suspected of election fraud and brutal persecution of peaceful protesters following the recent presidential elections. This welcome step would be a strong message.
Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, who also took part in the meeting, told President Levits and his Lithuanian colleague about his recent meeting with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, praising her for her efforts in promoting democratisation in Belarus.
