President of Latvia Egils Levits had a conference call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the current developments in Belarus and several other issues on the current agenda of the United Nations.

António Guterres asked President Levits to share his views on the current developments in Belarus. Egils Levits underlined that international community must continue to urge Belarusian government to hold free repeat elections. Belarusian officials who authorised persecution of members of the public or falsified election results should be targeted with personal sanctions. President also briefly presented the main conclusions of today’s virtual meeting with presidents of Lithuania, Estonia and Poland who confirmed this common position on Belarus.

During the phone call, President of Latvia praised the UN for its efforts in countering disinformation, to which António Guterres congratulated Latvia on successful containment of novel Coronavirus pandemic and leading the world in its fight against disinformation in a global UN initiative in more than 130 member states. President and Secretary General both reaffirmed their continued commitment to close cooperation in the field of disinformation.
