Egils Levits
Valsts prezidents: Islandei ir ļoti nozīmīga loma Latvijas neatkarības atjaunošanā
On 18 February, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson in the Riga Castle to discuss the excellent bilateral relations between Latvia and Iceland and ways of strengthening them in future.

President Levits thanked Iceland for playing a crucial role in restoration of Latvia’s independence. Iceland was the first country to recognise the restoration of sovereignty of Latvia and other Baltic countries on 22 August 1991.

Egils Levits and Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson exchanged views on areas in which Latvia and Iceland could strengthen bilateral cooperation, for example, economy and climate, strengthening of regional security, international organisations and other fields.

Foreign Affairs Minister of Iceland explained how Iceland contributes to further develop NATO’s political dimension, enhancement of Alliance’s collective defence and active preparations for Brexit.

President Levits and Minister Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson also discussed the cooperation between Baltic and Nordic countries on strengthening regional competitiveness, role of international laws in promoting security and fight against cyberthreats.

Foreign Affairs Minister of Iceland emphasised that this is his first visit to Latvia and thanked the Latvian side for its hospitality.
