Egils Levits
Valsts prezidenta Egila Levita runa Latvijas Republikas proklamēšanas dienai veltītajā svētku koncertā Latvijas Nacionālajā teātrī

Good evening, dear people of Latvia,

Good evening, dear ladies and gentlemen,

I

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to this historic hall. It is my great pleasure to once again welcome the recipients of the highest honours in this hall tonight.

Tonight’s Anniversary Concert showcases the richness of the national culture in Latvia. Latvian culture is the keystone of the Latvian state.

II

All modern democracies strive for freedom and prosperity, but Latvia is the only state whose duty is to guarantee that Latvian nation, language and culture lives and evolves throughout the centuries. We must be aware and think about that every day.

Latvian state would not have its unique Latvian identity without the Latvian nation. Identity is why the Republic of Latvia exists. Latvian nation embodies the national identity through its culture and language.

Comprised of heritage and creativity, contemporary national culture is one of the key indicators of quality of life in Latvia.

We all can and must nurture, promote and support it.

III

Official languages are used for democratic participation and communication. In Latvia, we use Latvian. Geographic borders of the Latvian state were historically determined based on the use of Latvian.

In democratic Latvia, all inhabitants must be able to speak and use the same official language in communication.

To change the overall linguistic landscape and environment in Latvia, we must make sure everyone respects that. Our country must be Latvian.

IV

Dear friends,

We all live in the environment built on shared vision of good and bad. This vision unites individuals and forms a society. It also determines the choices and decisions made by politicians.

V

Throughout different historic phases our heroes whom we remember and honour this year with special events were able to consolidate around collective goals. Goals that have always been defined with Latvia in mind.

We should use them as the source of inspiration and energy required to make bold steps.

VI

What does today’s Latvia need most?

Solidarity and justice. Solidarity is key to reducing social exclusion. Every member of society must be treated equally, no matter how big or seemingly small the issue might be. We must create a supportive environment for champions and the vulnerable. Societies based on solidarity and justice ensure that all people have decent life. That is how we should strengthen loyalty to our dear Latvia.

VII

Everyone is equal, everyone is the same. All places in Latvia are equal. We must constantly be aware of that and treat our state and people with equality.

That way our decisions will become more balanced and we will be able to see the big picture a little more sharply. That is how we all thrive in the next century for Latvia.

VIII

Let us now show our loyalty and love for Latvia, our commitment to making it better and greater, by joining hands. Just give your hand to the person next to you. Let us enjoy this moment of togetherness!
