Egils Levits
Valsts prezidenta Egila Levita uzruna Zinību dienā Rīgas 88. vidusskolā

Dear friends,

New friends starting their schooling today,

Madam Headmaster,

Dear parents,

Teachers,

and all 12th-year senior pupils for whom this is the last First Day of School assembly,

Good morning!

I

I am very happy to be here with you today because 1st of September is a special day. We look back at the summer which passed so quickly that you barley notice. At least that is how I felt. My summer was over before I even noticed. And, at the same time, you must be feeling exited and curious as to what this year will bring you. You reunite with your classmates, schoolmates, teachers and get ready for the academic school year ahead.

II

School is a truly wonderful time of your life. Whet at school, you can spend all your time on yourself, learning, self-development, everything you need to fulfil your future dreams and become who you think and want to be. You can do all that while in school.

Let me wish you plenty of success in your studies, and, more importantly, excitement of discovering new knowledge in such field as physics and mathematics. It is a rewarding feeling to realise that you now know something which previously seemed difficult to grasp. Such epiphanies are an inextricable part of the learning process.

Thank you to the parents and grandparents for doing your best at explaining your children how to tackle a homework and other assignments or simply giving your youngsters time and space to find solutions and figure out answers by themselves.

III

We are all unique and original. The children starting their schooling today are special, as well. Latvia needs their uniqueness because Latvia is a diverse country. Diversity is our strength!

We share the same official language and most of the subjects, which you are going to learn at this school, will be taught in official language. However, on top of official language and common Latvian culture, each of you has their own cultural and language background, which is an asset not only you hold, but also the whole Latvia has. I believe that the ability to align these goals is the advantage of this school, making it one of the bet school in Riga.

Let me wish you all success – plenty of energy to the teachers and more manageable and doable tests for the pupil.

Good luck to all of you!
