Egils Levits

Esteemed Minister, Chief of the Defence Staff, troops, officers, inhabitants of Saldus, ladies and gentlemen,

I

Statehood is the fulfilment of nation’s desire for self-determination.

National Armed Forces, border patrol, police, firefighting and rescue officers are the ones who defend our statehood and territorial integrity.

You protect our country’s and nation’s identity, values and beliefs that our rooted in our shared culture and historical experiences.

You protect the security, peace and freedom of all Latvians. It is a noble and sacred task – a complex mission that you carry on with pride.

II

Ukrainians are currently defending their freedom and independence with all the courage they have. It clearly shows how important national armed forces and support of interior sector and society as a whole is for the statehood of any country. Russian invasion of Ukraine also clearly shows that there may still be the need to defend your land with weapons in your arms in Europe of the 21st century.

III

Latvia joined NATO 18 years ago. Our allies are firmly committed to defending every inch of NATO territory and each of its member states.

IV

NATO command is currently working on permanent, full-scale military presence of its forces in the eastern flank of the Alliance, which also includes Baltics.

Latvia has already begun working on a location for the new NATO military base. It is part of the deterrence posture. We also continue to steadily upgrade our already impressive combat capabilities. Long-awaited and likely NATO membership of Finland and Sweden will further enhance security of the Baltic region.

V

Membership in the biggest and most powerful defence alliance in the world, the NATO, comes with significant responsibilities for Latvia. It is therefore vital to  make sure our army and interior sector is well-trained, resourced and professional.

Let us not forget that high moral standards and conviction probably play even greater role than modern military equipment here.

Ukraine is a vivid example of this. We feel solidarity with Ukrainian people and try to help them in all ways possible. We provide significant military assistance. Therefore, I want to thank National Armed Forces for all their efforts in Ukraine.

VI

We must be ready to defend our country, our nation and democracy at all times. I genuinely believe that our National Armed Force, border force, police force, firefighters and rescuers are up to this task.

Latvia is currently engulfed in enormous patriotism and love of Latvians towards their country.

VII

Congratulations on the 32nd anniversary of restoration of Latvia’s national independence!

On behalf of all Latvians, thank you for your service, for high professional standards and discipline.

May loyalty to Latvia and military camaraderie be always with you.

God bless Latvia!
