Līga Priede un Andra Levite

On 12 March, First Lady of Latvia, gynaecologist Andra Levite attended the Annual Awards in Medicine 2021 presentation ceremony and presented the Midwife of the Year 2021 award to Līga Priede, midwife at Riga Maternity Hospital.

Address by Andra Levite

Good evening dear audience, viewers, colleagues!

Today it is my pleasure to present an award to a woman who, with professionalism and empathy, helps other women at one of the most emotional times of their lives – during labour.

Allow me to quote some of the testimonials we have heard from happy mothers after giving birth about the woman of the hour:

  • “She lessened my stress during childbirth.”
  • “Highly professional with an individual approach.”
  • “I'd never imagined I could laugh during childbirth.”

The winner of this award protects the health of the mother, as well as the new-born, she brings tears of joy and helps new families come into being.

Sadly, today very near to us the lives of mothers and new-borns are savagely threatened, tears of pain, despair and anger are being shed, families are being separated.

Light and darkness.

Life and death.

Riga Maternity Hospital and Mariupol Maternity Hospital.

Our world needs more people like the winner of this award. Let us not lose sight of our internal moral compass!

The Midwife of the Year 2021 award goes to Līga Priede, midwife at Riga Maternity Hospital.
