President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Chairperson of the Council of Delna Association Valdis Liepiņš in the Riga Castle today. During the conversation, Mr Liepiņš spoke about the current activities of Delna on various projects aimed at promoting the principle of responsible openness in the society as a whole, but also in the government, legislative process, and business sector.
Mr Liepiņš mentioned the situation with the change of corporate income tax as one of the most painful issues in the functioning of civic society, which resulted in a significant decrease of private sector’s support to non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Both parties exchanged views on how to support NGOs with public benefit status so that they would not be so dependent on private sector’s support.
