Thirty-six years ago, Latvia awoke with a sense of anxiety and anticipation. Members of the Supreme Council had to make the most important decision of their lives. They were being watched not only by the whole of Latvia, but also by neighbouring countries, Latvians abroad, and friends across the globe. Events were also being closely followed by our adversaries, who continued to hope that we would falter and freeze in fear rather than step onto an uncertain path of the unknown.
The success of the vote on 4 May 1990 was not a foregone conclusion. Yet the goal was of such importance that it was worth taking the risk and making the attempt. And it succeeded. What the people so deeply desired was achieved – to decide and act for themselves once again. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. We can wake up every morning and ask ourselves – do we wish to live in a free Latvia today? If the answer is yes, then we must rise, decide, and act for ourselves. However exhausting this may sometimes be, it is a remarkable privilege to be able to ask questions and seek our own answers. How fortunate we are that we can do this ourselves! All good things are in our own hands, but the reasons for our shortcomings must also be sought, first and foremost, in the mirror rather than in some external enemy. Nevertheless, an external enemy does exist. So be it. For our destiny is not decided elsewhere. It is shaped by our attitude towards one another and towards Latvia in our daily lives.
Although the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia was adopted thirty-six years ago, every 4 May prompts us once again to reflect on the price of our country’s freedom and independence. Yes, and also on the fragility of democracy. Because freedom, independence, and democracy are not an examination that you pass once and then live with the result forever. They are an ongoing process of learning and challenge. But today is a day for celebration. Because it is not only work that shapes our Latvia, but also joy. And the more of it, the better!
I extend my congratulations on the 36th anniversary of the Restoration of the Independence of the Republic of Latvia!
