President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Ildze Straume, Gunārs Dukšte, Kaspars Radziņš and Ojārs Millers from Latvian Orienteering Federation (LOF) at the Riga Castle on 9 February.

LOF invited President Levits to become the patron of ‘Star Relay’ orienteering competition, which will take place one day before the Day of the Restoration of Latvian Independence on 3 May, near Krimulda. ‘It will be a relay. Teams of five will set off at 20:00 and compete long into the dark of night. We think this exciting relay will draw large crowds. Orienteering is a grassroots sport, open to all. Anyone who wants to compete should start training now,’ Gunārs Dukšte pointed out.

President accepted patronage and noted the important contribution of orienteering to public health and bringing generations together through outdoor sports. Egils Levits recalled orienteering lessons at school and positive emotions this grassroots activity brings.
