On 18 February, President Edgars Rinkēvičs chaired a meeting of the National Security Council at the Riga Castle.

The meeting addressed current developments in international politics, including discussions held within NATO and European Union formats, the Munich Security Conference that took place from 13 to 15 February, and talks between the United States, Ukraine and Russia on achieving peace in Ukraine, as well as Latvia’s planned support for Ukraine.

The National Security Council also heard reports from the Minister for Defence, Andris Sprūds, and Commander of the National Armed Forces, Major General Kaspars Pudāns, on the military strengthening of Latvia’s eastern border and the deployment of counter-mobility infrastructure. The Council agreed that action must be adaptable to the current threat level and that the reinforcement of the eastern border should be implemented comprehensively (including land roads, railway connections, material and technical resources positioned in the border area, and military capabilities). The National Security Council requested a progress report on the measures undertaken by the middle of this year.

The meeting included reports from state security institutions on the current situation.
