On 14 May, President Edgars Rinkēvičs chaired a meeting of the National Security Council at the Riga Castle.
The meeting heard a report by the Minister for Transport on the current situation regarding solutions to protect Riga International Airport from the threat of unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles. Taking into account the Council's discussion on 29th January this year and the identified significant shortcomings in the security plans and measures implemented by the airport as a critical infrastructure object, the meeting assessed the interim steps taken and the future direction for improving the airport's security solutions.
The meeting also heard reports from state security institutions on the current situation, including an evaluation of the information space and cyber-security situation ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in June. The Council commended the efforts of state security institutions, the State Police, and the responsible services concerning the events of 9th May in Latvia.
