On 31 October, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Krišjānis Kariņš and members of the political alliance ‘New Unity’ (NU). Meeting focused on coalition negotiations. Memorandum of cooperation prepared by NU is a ‘good basis for new coalition’, Egils Levits told during the meeting.
Next government and its composition must reflect current priorities and encourage political parties to focus on these challenges, said President of Latvia. ‘If there is a specific issue that needs to be addressed, there should be a Cabinet member responsible for fixing it. New Unity has proposed a new energy, climate and environment ministry without hiring more civil servants and merging the right departments of several ministries into single cluster instead,’ President Levits said.
Egils Levits also suggested to move some departments from one ministry to another. ‘Employment is a matter of economic and not social policy, for example,’ he told.
