On 7 January, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the leadership of the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia and representatives of its member organisations at the Riga Castle to discuss the planned amendments to the Labour Law, the financing model for the healthcare sector, as well as measures for ensuring regional public transport services and maintaining railway infrastructure. In addition, the parties discussed the complex solutions needed to foster a positive environment in educational institutions by reducing violence.
“Today I met with representatives of the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia to hear the organisation’s comprehensive perspective on current trade union issues. I believe that trade unions have a vital role to play in defending employees’ interests, promoting social dialogue, and strengthening society’s overall wellbeing. I also conclude that it is necessary to increase public awareness of labour rights and to reinforce the capacity of the responsible institutions in matters relating to labour law,” said E. Rinkēvičs after the meeting.
