On 29 July, at the Riga Castle, Edgars Rinkēvičs, President of the Republic of Latvia, met with Sam Mostyn, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, who is staying in Latvia on an official visit from 28th to 30th of July. Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia is visiting Latvia upon official invitation of the Latvian side, and this is the first visit of this level in 35 years of diplomatic relations between the countries.

“Although geographically far apart, Latvia and Australia are like-minded nations. Our ties are reinforced through Australia’s Latvian diaspora. This year we mark 35 years since establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries,” President of Latvia said during the meeting.

During the meeting, sides exchanged views on Latvia-Australia bilateral relations, possibilities to expand cooperation in economy, culture and science, defence industry, and also in the framework of international organisations. One of the topics discussed was geopolitical challenges faced by Europe and Oceania, and further support to Ukraine. “Latvia is very grateful to Australia for its firm stance regarding Russian aggression, including enforcement of sanctions, as well as significant support it has provided to Ukraine,” President Rinkēvičs underlined.

President of Latvia noted the tremendous success of Latvian and Australian universities in building closer cooperation in fields like advanced materials, sensors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and other strategic sectors. Edgars Rinkēvičs also praised economic cooperation with Australia, highlighting the positive trends. Economic ties and partnerships between Latvian and Australian companies have particularly expanded since opening of Latvian embassy in Canberra, especially in areas such as information and communication technologies, artificial intelligence, defence industries, for example, between drone manufacturers.
