On 5 August, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis at the Riga Castle. The discussion focused on ways to strengthen internal security and its priority in the forthcoming national budget deliberations. A key topic of the conversation was the ongoing debate regarding planned changes to the service pension system and their impact on employees of the internal affairs services.
President Edgars Rinkēvičs emphasised that, in developing the service pension reform, it is essential to take into account the implications of the proposed changes for human resource availability within the internal affairs sector, given its critical role in ensuring internal security.
During the meeting, E. Rinkēvičs and R. Kozlovskis also discussed the current situation on Latvia’s eastern border and the President’s planned visit to the border region on 19 August. The purpose of the visit will be to assess progress in infrastructure development and technology implementation along the Latvian-Belarusian and Latvian-Russian borders.
Additionally, the President and the Minister reviewed the ongoing construction of new disaster management centres, as well as the working conditions of internal affairs personnel.
