On 9 March, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met at the Riga Castle with the Chairman of the Board of the Development Finance Institution Altum Reinis Bērziņš. During the meeting, the parties discussed Altum’s activities in 2025 and the results achieved across the various support programmes implemented by the institution.
President Rinkēvičs and Altum Chairman R. Bērziņš discussed lending trends, with particular attention to the limited access to credit in Latvia’s regions. The discussion also addressed issues raised during the President’s meeting with the Latgale Subcommittee of the Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee of the Saeima. The President invited Altum’s Management Board, together with its shareholders – the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economics and the Ministry of Agriculture – to assess the need for a targeted lending programme for municipalities along Latvia’s eastern border and other regions where lending levels have remained consistently low.
The meeting also addressed housing accessibility in the context of strengthening demographics, including Altum’s housing guarantee programme as well as the recently launched lending programme for the purchase of residential property in Latvia’s regions.
