On 18 September, President Edgars Rinkēvičs congratulated Dr. hist. h.c. Marģers Vestermanis, long-standing director of the Riga Jewish Community Museum “Jews in Latvia” and historian, Knight of the Order of the Three Stars, on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
“For a life dedicated to Latvia and work in illuminating true history!” – these are the words engraved on the plaque presented by President Rinkēvičs to Mr Vestermanis on this significant milestone.
Marģers Vestermanis was born on 18 September 1925 in Riga. He has published several books and scholarly articles on Jewish history and the Holocaust in Latvia. As a member of the Commission of Historians of Latvia between 1998 and 2019, he devoted particular attention to documenting the history of Latvian Jews and to researching the tragic chapters of Holocaust history.
