On 23 October, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification Valdis Dombrovskis at Riga Castle. The meeting focused on work on the European Union’s (EU) multiannual budget for 2028–2034, as well as EU support for Ukraine.
The President emphasised the importance of actively defending Latvia’s interests in negotiations on the next EU multiannual budget. “We must continue working to secure additional funding for Latvia, taking into account the challenges we face as a country on the EU’s eastern border, where we feel the adverse effects of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the security threats in the region every day. Latvia’s priorities remain unchanged – security and defence, competitiveness and support for the regions, as well as stronger connectivity with Europe,” said Edgars Rinkēvičs.
The officials also discussed continued support for Ukraine, with particular attention to ensuring electricity and heating supplies, as well as macro-financial assistance.
