On 8 May, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis at the Riga Castle. During the meeting, the parties discussed issues concerning the strengthening of the internal affairs system, as well as the readiness of the responsible services in light of potential provocations related to 9 May this year. The Minister of the Interior confirmed that the services are actively monitoring both the information space and activities in public areas.
The President and the Minister also discussed the situation on Latvia’s eastern border, with particular focus on the challenges posed by illegal migration along the Latvian–Belarusian border. President Rinkēvičs emphasised the importance of cooperation between the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence to reinforce border protection regime, while highlighting the significance of developing border infrastructure and technological solutions.
During the meeting, significant attention was also paid to the improvement of the civil protection system, including the establishment and adaptation of shelters, the regulatory framework, and accessibility of information to the public.
