On 4 August, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Māris Zviedris at the Jūrmala residence. During the meeting, the parties discussed the conclusions drawn from the 2025 municipal elections and the preparations underway for the 2026 Saeima elections. The President congratulated M. Zviedris on assuming the role of Chair of the CEC and wished him success in strengthening the Commission’s role in organising and overseeing elections.
“Well-organised elections enhance the resilience of Latvia’s democracy and foster public trust in state governance. The CEC plays an important role in this process. The ability of the CEC to effectively coordinate the work of all institutions involved in the electoral process directly affects citizens’ ability to exercise their voting rights and participate in referenda,” said President Rinkēvičs during the meeting.
The President also called on the CEC Chair to inform the National Security Council about the Commission’s plans regarding the conduct of the 2026 parliamentary elections and the measures in place to mitigate the risks identified thus far.
