On 27 April, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Minister for Health, Hosam Abu Meri, at Riga Castle. During the meeting, they discussed the state reimbursement system for medicines and medical devices, as well as opportunities to improve the system’s transparency and expand the support provided.
“Overall, changes have been made to the reimbursement system for medicines in recent years – the prescribing procedure has been revised, additional instruments have been introduced to support patients, and state budget funding allocated to cover the costs of reimbursable medicines has significantly increased. Every resident of Latvia matters, which is why it is essential to listen to those patient groups and the medical professionals treating them whose needs have not been addressed until now. Today, I encouraged the Minister for Health to work together with organisations representing the sector to find solutions to support patients with type 1 diabetes and oncology patients,” the President stated after the meeting.
The Minister provided an update on progress in identifying all key challenges within the healthcare sector in order to prepare the sector’s priority measures for 2027–2030.
