On 6 June, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Minister for Health Hosam Abu Meri. Meeting in the Riga Castle focused on infrastructure of two largest Latvian university hospitals – reconstruction of the National Cancer Centre and construction of the Infectious Disease and Respiratory Health Clinic at the Riga East University Hospital, and complete delivery of A2 block of Pauls Stradiņš University Hospital.
“In recent weeks, staff and patients of the National Cancer Centre have grown increasingly alarmed about events and media information suggesting possible postponing of Centre’s reconstruction. This is a perfectly understandable reaction, which requires dialogue with industry and clear signals about next steps. Given the vital role and contribution of healthcare professionals, they need to be fully aware of the progress of strategic projects against plans. Healthcare infrastructure projects are deeply integrated. Closely linked to development of national healthcare network and public needs. Health Ministry is also expected to provide clear and timely updates to practitioners on the progress of major hospital projects, for example, in Riga East University Hospital and Pauls Stradiņš University Hospital,” President Rinkēvičs told after the meeting.
Officials also discussed continued hospital system reform, pharmaceutical price review and healthcare funding for 2025 and 2026, and resilience of healthcare system against crisis.
