On 15 May 2026, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Ayman Al Safadi, who is paying a working visit to Latvia. During the meeting, the officials discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and in Ukraine.

The President commended the excellent relations between Latvia and Jordan and reaffirmed Latvia’s interest in deepening political and economic cooperation, as well as strengthening cooperation in security and defence. “We appreciate the positive development of Latvia–Jordan relations over more than thirty years. We wish to diversify our economic cooperation, particularly by expanding cooperation in high value-added sectors. At the same time, given the regional security challenges, the defence industries in our countries are developing rapidly. There is also potential for cooperation in this field,” said E. Rinkēvičs.

Discussing the current security situation in the Middle East region, international efforts to stabilise it, and the need to address the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, President of Latvia emphasized that developments in the Middle East directly affect global security. E. Rinkēvičs also noted that Iran must not be allowed to continue escalating aggression and threatening international trade routes.

The President also expressed appreciation for Jordan’s support for Ukraine, including within international organisations. E. Rinkēvičs further commended the security cooperation launched between Jordan and Ukraine, which demonstrates that Ukraine has become a provider of security for Middle Eastern countries while itself engaged in active warfare.
