Continuing his working visit to Germany, on 12 May President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Daniel Günther, Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein. During the meeting, both officials expressed unequivocal support for Ukraine through ensuring necessary aid for the Ukrainian people, as well as by hosting Ukrainian refugees.
The President of Latvia appreciated Germany’s increased military support for Ukraine as it fights for European security. In turn, the Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein applauded Latvia’s unwavering position and active public role in the international arena against Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
During the meeting the President of Latvia and the Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein also outlined the areas where Latvia and Schleswig-Holstein could continue to develop their cooperation, namely, renewable energy, production of health care and medical technologies, information technology and data security, as well as tourism promotion. “Taking into consideration the current geopolitical situation, I appreciate the willingness of Schleswig-Holstein to cooperate ever more closely in strengthening the economic autonomy of the region. We are connected not only by the Baltic Sea, but also cultural values spanning across centuries – we must take advantage of these opportunities,” the President of Latvia noted. “I am truly pleased with the active political dialogue and practical collaboration that we share both bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks, including the European Union and NATO,” President Levits continued.
Furthermore, the President of Latvia invited governmental and business representatives of Schleswig-Holstein to visit Riga on 20–21 June of this year to attend the Three Seas Initiative Business Forum which aims to attract investments for infrastructure projects in the region.
