On 30 October, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Alexus G. Grynkewich, at Riga Castle. The discussion focused on the current security situation, NATO’s deterrence and defence strategies, and the implementation of SACEUR’s theory of victory by ensuring that the forces and capabilities required to defend the entire territory of the Alliance are in place.
“It is important that the entire Alliance is ready to respond, strengthen deterrence and prevent an adversary from achieving its objectives. It is significant that NATO’s Multinational Brigade in Latvia is currently conducting its largest force deployment exercise to date, Resolute Reforger 2026, including along Latvia’s eastern border. This exercise provides an opportunity to strengthen the combat capabilities of our Allies and their cooperation on Latvian territory outside military bases,” emphasised the President.
Both sides also welcomed the NATO Digital Backbone Experimentation exercise DiBAX 2026 taking place in Latvia, highlighting the importance of new technologies and digital infrastructure in conducting effective defence operations, as demonstrated by Ukraine’s experience.
For information: From 26 October to 8 November, NATO’s Multinational Brigade in Latvia is conducting its largest force deployment exercise to date, Resolute Reforger 2026, involving approximately 3,000 service personnel and 1,000 items of military equipment.
Meanwhile, the final phase of NATO’s Digital Backbone Experimentation exercise DiBAX 2026, known as NATO FUSE, is taking place in Latvia on 29–30 October. It is attended by senior NATO military officials, including Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus G. Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT) Admiral Pierre Vandier, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, and commanders of the armed forces of several Allied countries.
