On 23 October, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Chairman of the National Competitiveness Commission Arnis Sauka at the Riga Castle to discuss the Commission’s achievements and future objectives.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the Commission's legislative initiatives to date, the practical results achieved, and the current proposals under consideration. Work is currently underway on amendments to the State Administration Structure Law, proposed by the President. These amendments aim to improve data exchange between public administration institutions. A proposal has also been submitted to the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development to introduce regulatory amendments designed to reduce bureaucracy in the construction sector.
A. Sauka also briefed the President on the preparations for the Artificial Intelligence Forum organised by the National Competitiveness Commission. The Forum will feature three main discussion topics: the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence, learning through artificial intelligence, and the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance the efficiency of public administration.
The central focus of the Forum will be on concrete proposals outlining how Latvia can safely and effectively implement artificial intelligence solutions to strengthen the country's competitiveness. Particular attention will also be devoted to the European regulatory framework on artificial intelligence – specifically, Latvia’s potential proposals for simplifying legal regulation in light of the European Commission’s ongoing review of digital sector legislation This includes the Artificial Intelligence Act, the General Data Protection Regulation, and other related legal instruments.
