On 1 October, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met at the Riga Castle with the Director of the Artificial Intelligence Centre (hereinafter – the Centre), Natālija Čerņecka. During the meeting, the President congratulated N. Čerņecka on her appointment. The parties discussed the Director’s vision regarding the Centre’s objectives and expected outcomes.
“The Artificial Intelligence Centre must provide a tangible contribution in three areas. First, in matters of security by strengthening the ability to identify and prevent the use of deepfakes in the information space, particularly in the context of the upcoming Saeima elections. Second, the Centre should foster the development of artificial intelligence business ideas through the advantages of a special regulatory environment. Third, artificial intelligence has already present in our schools and universities – students use digital tools daily, while educators are seeking ways to use them responsibly and effectively in the learning process. I see a role for the Centre in cooperation with partners in the education sector to support our schools and to help teachers employ artificial intelligence as a digital assistant. It is also very important to strengthen students’ knowledge and understanding both the possibilities and the limitations of digital tools,” said President Rinkēvičs after the meeting.

The Artificial Intelligence Centre was established following the President’s initiative. Its creation was supported by the National Security Council in April 2024. In November 2024 a broad discussion was held at the Riga Castle on the Centre's operating model and its legal framework.
