On 3 August, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Director of the Artificial Intelligence Centre, Guna Puce, at Riga Castle.
The parties discussed the Artificial Intelligence Centre’s work to date, including the results of the first round of project selection for participation in the special regulatory environment. The pilot projects cover artificial intelligence solutions for personalised support for child development, health management for people with diabetes, and the automation of organisational processes.
The President emphasised that the regulatory environment must become an accessible and effective tool enabling both local and international companies to develop innovative artificial intelligence solutions in Latvia safely and swiftly. The services offered through the regulatory environment should continue to expand from supporting individual projects to becoming a widely used platform.
With the Saeima elections due to take place this autumn, and in view of the Artificial Intelligence Centre’s responsibility to provide opinions on cases involving the use of deepfake systems during the pre-election campaign period, the President emphasised that, alongside close cooperation between the responsible authorities, it is essential to provide the public and the media with clear information about the risks associated with artificial intelligence and to strengthen society’s ability to recognise manipulated digital content.
