On 30 October, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Ombudsperson Karina Palkova at the Riga Castle. The President congratulated Karina Palkova on her appointment as Ombudsperson, emphasising the important role of the ombudsman’s office in the protection of human rights.
“The legislator has granted the ombudsperson significant powers to achieve the objectives set out in the Ombudsman Law and to ensure that state authority in Latvia is exercised lawfully, effectively, and in accordance with the principles of good governance. I am confident that under Ms Palkova’s leadership, these powers will be exercised with political neutrality, thereby strengthening democracy and the rule of law in Latvia,” said President Rinkēvičs.
The President and the Ombudsperson discussed the work already accomplished by the ombudsman’s office in 2025, as well as priorities for 2026.
