Valsts prezidents Edgars Rinkēvičs tiekas ar Moldovas prezidenti Maiju Sandu Rīgas pilī

On 1 April, President Edgars Rinkēvičs hosted the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, on an official visit to Latvia. During the meeting, the officials discussed bilateral relations between Latvia and Moldova, Moldova’s progress towards European Union membership, regional security and global challenges, as well as support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

The President expressed satisfaction with the strong and close relations between Latvia and Moldova, as well as the active political dialogue. Edgars Rinkēvičs commended Moldova’s consistent approach and progress in implementing reforms on its path towards the European Union, reaffirming Latvia’s readiness to continue providing both political and practical support. “Latvia has no doubt that Moldova’s future lies in the European Union. Latvia supports Moldova not only in words but also in deeds. Almost every Latvian ministry and its subordinate institutions share their experience and provide support to their Moldovan counterparts,” stated E. Rinkēvičs.

President of Latvia commended Moldova’s support for Ukraine and its firm stance against Russian aggression. The officials agreed on the need to continue a strict sanctions policy against Russia, particularly targeting the Russian energy sector, which helps finance its war machine.

President Rinkēvičs noted that Latvia and Moldova face similar challenges and threats, including those related to border security, airspace violations, attempts to interfere in electoral processes, energy security and the protection of critical infrastructure. E. Rinkēvičs expressed Latvia’s solidarity with Moldova in relation to the state of emergency in the energy sector following Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
