On 2 November, President of Latvia Egils Levits went on a regional visit to Dobele to discuss current heating and electricity supply challenges, education and employment opportunities, and other significant factors for long-term regional development.
President of Latvia met with the staff and elected members of Dobele Regional Council to collect additional feedback on regional reform and get insight into how regional leadership intends to improve regional governance and quality of municipal services. President Levits explained the purpose of the bill on elected local community representatives and why he supported regulations promoting empowerment and democratic affiliation of local population within the broader regions. President also called for closer cooperation within new regions as a significant factor for long-term regional development.
Meeting then moved on to education opportunities offered by the region. After listening to planned school reforms, President of Latvia reminded that a good reform policy ensures constant monitoring of progress and regular adjustments, if necessary.
President and regional administration and elected members also talked about the government negotiations, urgent government reforms and national energy policy.
President Levits will continue his regional visit to Dobele at the largest national food producer AS ‘Dobeles dzirnavnieks’, meet with region’s youth to discuss ‘Latvianness: a privilege or a burden?’ during the sixth event of the debate series ‘#Satversme100: future values’ and tour the restored Dobele Livonian Order Castle.
