On 30 September, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs welcomed Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna at the Riga Castle for the working visit to Latvia.
President strongly praised the excellent relations between Latvia and Estonia. He thanked Estonia for regular hands-on support in patrolling Latvian-Belarusian border. Edgars Rinkēvičs also expressed Latvia’s solidarity with Estonia after the recent acts of sabotage against Estonian defence industry company Milrem Robotics orchestrated by Russian secret services.
According to President of Latvia, Russia uses these attacks and acts of sabotage to undermine support to Ukraine, cause confusion in people and test NATO. Edgars Rinkēvičs, however, believes that there is no reason to adjust the military threat assessment, and direct attack from Russia is currently very unlikely. Both officials agreed that further development of defence capabilities and military presence of allies, including the US, is a must.
President of Latvia highlighted the successful coordination of Baltic-Nordic cooperation or the NB8 format by Estonia, especially regional security and Ukraine support agenda.
President Rinkēvičs and Foreign Minister Tsahkna also discussed the latest EU affairs, cooperation in scope of regional infrastructure projects and other priorities.
