Valsts prezidents apmeklē Agroresursu un ekonomikas institūta Stendes pētniecības centru “Dižzemes”

On 17 April, President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited the Stende Research Centre “Dižzemes” of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics in Talsi Municipality to learn about its work in the field of crop breeding and trials.

The President discussed current developments in crop breeding, the adaptation of varieties to Latvian conditions, and the centre’s role in Latvian agriculture and its contribution to the development of organic farming with the leadership of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics and researchers and specialists at the Stende Research Centre. Plant breeding is closely linked to specific environmental conditions – significant differences exist even within Latvia’s regions – therefore, the development of varieties suited to local conditions is of strategic importance for ensuring both yield and quality.

The meeting also addressed issues of international cooperation, including the institute’s involvement in joint research with Ukrainian partners to find solutions for restoring soil contaminated with heavy metals as a result of warfare and enabling its future use in agriculture.

“The work of the Stende Research Centre is particularly important in developing crops that are vital for Latvia – barley, wheat, rye and oats – which can ensure stable yields and quality in our regional conditions and strengthen Latvia’s ability to provide itself with high-quality food. Stende is a place where science is transformed into practical solutions for farmers. It is encouraging that modern technologies are increasingly being used in research, enabling researchers to achieve results more quickly. I would like to thank both the researchers and other staff for this,” said President Edgars Rinkēvičs at the conclusion of the visit.
