On 28 May, President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited the Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia. During the visit, the President met with the Director of the Institute, Andris Anspoks, toured the spectroscopy, energy materials, and micro and nanodevices laboratories, and held discussions with doctoral students and representatives of the biotechnology start-up “Cellbox Labs”.

“The Institute of Solid State Physics of the University of Latvia is one of the key driving forces behind the development of Latvia’s high-tech sector. The Institute's work in solid-state and new materials research provides a significant contribution to fields such as electronics, energy, medical technologies, telecommunications, and others.

Under the auspices of the Institute, a new industry is emerging in Latvia – microfluidics. One example is the biotechnology start-up “Cellbox Labs”, established by researchers at the Institute, which develops organ-on-a-chip technologies to help pharmaceutical companies develop new medicines more efficiently. This is clear evidence that scientists in Latvia can achieve great heights.

At the Institute, I met many young researchers who work with passion and enthusiasm on issues relevant to both businesses and society. For example, they are developing technologies that make batteries more powerful and longer-lasting, exploring environmentally friendly alternatives for energy production and storage, and improving various electronic devices to more effectively monitor air quality, noise levels, and other environmental parameters. These young researchers are not only talented and knowledgeable but are also highly motivated to create positive change in society and build a more sustainable future.

During the visit, it was also a pleasure to meet doctoral students from several universities. We briefly discussed the practical implementation of the new doctoral study model,” said President Rinkēvičs after the visit.
