On 9 October, President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited the Latvian Centre for Infectious Diseases at Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS) and familiarised himself with the work of the hospital and its laboratory.

“The Latvian Centre for Infectious Diseases performs functions vital for safeguarding public health, including the diagnosis of infectious diseases and containment of their spread. I believe we will all remember the care provided by the centre’s staff to patients with the most severe cases of COVID-19. Relocating the centre’s functions to the new Pulmonary Health and Infectious Diseases Treatment Centre in the coming years would strengthen the resilience of the healthcare system and provide a modern, patient-friendly environment,” said President Rinkēvičs.

During a meeting with Professor Baiba Rozentāle, chief physician of the Latvian Centre for Infectious Diseases, and Vadims Beļuns, Chairman of the RAKUS Board, current issues in the field of infectious diseases were discussed, as well as matters related to the construction of the Pulmonary Health and Infectious Diseases Treatment Centre.
