On 16 September, the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, visited the Supreme Court and met with the President of the Supreme Court, Ivars Bičkovičs, Chair of the Civil Law Chamber, Aigars Strupišs, Chairperson of the Administrative Law Chamber, Veronika Krūmiņa and Justice Pēteris Opincāns from the Criminal Law Chamber.

While visiting the Supreme Court, President of Latvia and Supreme Court Senate members discussed the challenges facing judicial system, including increasing administrative caseload, growing complexity of cases and excessive delays within criminal proceedings. President and Senate representatives touched upon possible institutional response for improving efficiency of proceedings and judges.

“Latvia’s legal system operates well. In comparison with other European countries, Latvia has professional courts. However, there is always a room for improvement in terms of raising the quality even higher,” underlined the President.
In conclusion, President Levits and justices and staff of the Supreme Court also discussed various trends in the judicial system. President of the Supreme Court, Ivars Bičkovičs, thanked President of Latvia, Egils Levits, for visiting the Supreme Court and wished all the best in the new job.
