President of Latvia Egils Levits will attend the opening of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) on 7-8 November 2022.

In his address to other world leaders, President Levits will urge other countries to speed up  planning and implementation of activities specifically targeted at achieving the Paris Agreement goals, such as limiting global warming below 2° C and quicker transition to renewable energy sources to stop consumption of natural gas due to geopolitical situation.

President of Latvia will take part in discussion on future of energy sector and climate education, and also have several bilateral meetings during the COP27.

About COP27:

The 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt) on 6-18 November. COP27 brings together 197 signatory parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate (UNFCCC), including the European Union (EU) and all its member states.

COP27 will take stock of the progress towards Paris Agreement goals, namely,  to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. COP27 will urge countries with modest climate change targets to define and implement more ambitious climate goals.
